A laboratory of mathematical foundations of machine learning has opened at the Institute for Information Transmission Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Kharkevich Institute). It will cooperate with the PhysTech School of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. The laboratory will be headed by the head of the Department of Mathematical Fundamentals of Management and the laboratory of the MMO FPMI Alexander Gasnikov. 

Undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students are invited to participate in the life of the laboratory, mainly from MIPT. They are expected to undertake research projects within the framework of the main curriculum, as well as summer schools and internships in the field of mathematical statistics, mathematical methods of data analysis and optimization. Already, the laboratory is developing new training courses that will be available to students of the FPMI.

The key goal is to combine various areas of research on the basics of machine learning and optimization of the highest level in the hands of a single team. The laboratory strives to strengthen integration with other scientific collectives of the the Institute for Information Transmission Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences and academic partners, especially FPMI.

According to Gasnikov, the laboratory's activities will be based on research with a good scientific component, which allows mathematically strictly substantiate the effectiveness of the proposed solutions. But the team is also ready to work on practically important tasks with industrial partners.
